Morgan Wallen Biography: Early Life, The Voice, Dangerous, “Last Night”, I’m the Problem and the 2026 Still the Problem Tour

Morgan Wallen: Country Music’s Most Dominant and Divisive Star

By most commercial measures, Morgan Wallen is the biggest country star of his generation, and arguably one of the biggest artists in American music. His albums have spent more weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 than almost anyone this century. He fills football stadiums, and his songs dominate streaming services far beyond country radio.

He is also one of the most controversial figures in popular music. In 2021, a video of him using a racial slur led to his suspension by his label and a temporary ban from radio and awards shows. A 2024 arrest for throwing a chair from a Nashville rooftop bar added to his public troubles. Yet his commercial success has continued to grow.

Early Life in Tennessee

Morgan Cole Wallen was born on May 13, 1993, in Sneedville, Tennessee, a small town in the Appalachian region of East Tennessee. His father, Tommy Wallen, was a pastor, and his mother, Lesli, was a teacher. The family later moved to the Knoxville area.

He grew up singing in church and took piano and violin lessons as a child. In high school, his main passion was baseball. He was a promising pitcher at Gibbs High School in Corryton, Tennessee, until an elbow injury ended his hopes of a baseball career. He then turned seriously to music.

The Voice and Early Career

In 2014, Wallen auditioned for the sixth season of NBC’s The Voice. He initially joined Usher’s team and was later moved to Adam Levine’s team. He was eliminated in the playoff rounds, but the experience gave him exposure and connections in Nashville.

He moved to Nashville and signed with Panacea Records, releasing his EP Stand Alone in 2015. In 2016, he signed with Big Loud Records, the Nashville label that has remained his home, in partnership with Republic Records and later Mercury Records. His debut single with Big Loud, “The Way I Talk” (2016), reached the top 30 on country radio.

If I Know Me

His debut studio album, If I Know Me, was released in April 2018. Its breakthrough came with “Up Down”, featuring Florida Georgia Line, which became his first No. 1 on country airplay. “Whiskey Glasses” followed and became one of his signature songs and a major crossover hit. “Chasin’ You” also reached No. 1 on country radio.

The album was a slow-burning success, eventually reaching No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. It established his sound: a mix of traditional country storytelling, Southern rock influences, hip-hop-inflected rhythms and his distinctive raspy vocals.

Fatherhood

In July 2020, Wallen’s son, Indigo Wilder, was born. He shares custody with the boy’s mother, KT Smith. He has spoken about how becoming a father changed his life.

Dangerous: The Double Album

In October 2020, Wallen was removed as musical guest on Saturday Night Live after videos showed him partying maskless in Alabama, violating COVID-19 protocols. He apologized, and SNL brought him back in December 2020.

His second album, Dangerous: The Double Album, a 30-track project, was released in January 2021. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spent its first 10 weeks there. Singles such as “7 Summers”, “More Than My Hometown”, “Wasted on You” and “Sand in My Boots” became major hits.

The 2021 Racial Slur Controversy

In February 2021, a video surfaced showing Wallen using a racial slur outside his Nashville home. The backlash was immediate. Big Loud suspended his contract indefinitely, major radio companies removed his songs from playlists, and he was disqualified from the 2021 Academy of Country Music Awards.

Wallen apologized publicly and said he had entered rehab and met with Black leaders. He also said he donated $500,000 to Black-led organizations. The controversy prompted wide debate about race in country music.

Paradoxically, his streaming and sales increased in the weeks after the scandal, and Dangerous became Billboard’s top album of 2021. It spent more than 100 weeks in the Billboard 200’s top 10. Radio and awards organizations gradually reinstated him over the following year.

One Thing at a Time and “Last Night”

His third album, One Thing at a Time, released in March 2023, was a 36-track album that debuted at No. 1 with about 501,000 equivalent units. It spent 19 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1, the longest run for a country album in chart history at that time.

Its biggest hit, “Last Night”, spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Billboard’s top song of 2023. Other singles included “You Proof”, “Thinkin’ Bout Me” and “Everything I Love”. The album produced several No. 1 country radio hits and became Spotify’s most-streamed album of 2023.

His One Night at a Time Tour (2023–2024) was a stadium tour. In 2023, a vocal cord injury forced him to postpone several shows. At its peak, the tour set attendance records at multiple stadiums, including Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

“I Had Some Help” and the 2024 Arrest

In 2024, he joined Post Malone on “I Had Some Help”, which debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and spent six weeks there. It earned two Grammy nominations, Wallen’s only Grammy nominations to date.

In April 2024, he was arrested in Nashville after allegedly throwing a chair from the rooftop of a downtown bar. The chair landed near police officers. In December 2024 he pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment. He was sentenced to seven days at a DUI education center and two years of probation. He apologized, saying he was not proud of his behavior.

In November 2024, he won Entertainer of the Year at the CMA Awards, the top prize in country music, after being nominated in 2022 and 2023. He did not attend the ceremony, and the award was accepted on his behalf.

I’m the Problem

His fourth studio album, I’m the Problem, was released on May 16, 2025, through Big Loud and Mercury Records. The 37-track album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 493,000 equivalent units, the biggest debut of 2025. It included collaborations with artists such as Post Malone, Eric Church and Tate McRae, whose duet with Wallen, “What I Want”, debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100. “Love Somebody” also debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

The album spent its first eight weeks at No. 1 and eventually logged 13 nonconsecutive weeks at the top, including weeks in early 2026. That made Wallen the only artist to spend at least 10 weeks at No. 1 with three consecutive full-length albums. With those runs, he passed Adele for the second-most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this century. Luminate named I’m the Problem the most popular album in the United States across all genres for the first half of both 2025 and 2026.

In May 2025, Wallen performed on Saturday Night Live. He drew attention for leaving the stage abruptly during the closing goodnights, then posting “get me to God’s country” on Instagram.

Notably, Wallen chose not to submit I’m the Problem for Grammy consideration.

He supported the album with the I’m the Problem Tour in 2025, which included 20 stadium shows. He also opened Morgan Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen in Nashville.

At the 2025 CMA Awards, Wallen was nominated for Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, but did not win. Lainey Wilson took Entertainer of the Year.

The Still the Problem Tour

In October 2025, he announced the Still the Problem Tour, a 2026 stadium tour. It opened on April 10, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, and later expanded to 23 dates. It included two consecutive nights at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, the largest football stadium in the United States. Supporting acts rotated among Brooks & Dunn, HARDY, Ella Langley, Thomas Rhett and newer artists such as Gavin Adcock, Hudson Westbrook and Vincent Mason. The tour wrapped in Philadelphia in the summer of 2026.

“Been By Now”

During the tour, Wallen debuted a new song, “Been By Now”, at a sold-out show at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. He released it on July 24, 2026, his first solo song of 2026. It was produced by his longtime producer Joey Moi.

As of October 2026, Wallen had been seen in the studio, but he had not officially announced a fifth album.

Sound and Style

Wallen’s music blends traditional country storytelling with modern production, Southern rock guitars and hip-hop rhythms. His raspy, Appalachian-accented voice and themes of small-town life, heartbreak, drinking and regret have connected with a huge audience, especially younger listeners on streaming services.

He is also known for releasing unusually long albums, with 30 to 37 tracks. This has been especially effective in the streaming era, keeping his albums at the top of the charts for long periods.

Legacy and Debate

Wallen’s career raises difficult questions. His commercial dominance is undeniable: he has broken chart records held for decades and has been one of the biggest stadium draws in music. Many of his fans connect deeply with his music and life story.

At the same time, his use of a racial slur in 2021 and his other public incidents have made him a lasting subject of debate about accountability in country music and the music industry. His success after the 2021 scandal prompted wide discussion about race, fandom and the power of streaming.

At 33, he has four multi-week No. 1 albums, several Hot 100 No. 1s including “Last Night”, a CMA Entertainer of the Year award and some of the most successful stadium tours in country music history.
