Usher: Three Decades of the “King of R&B”

Few artists have sustained success across as many eras as Usher. He released his first album in 1994 at 15. A decade later, Confessions became one of the best-selling albums of the 21st century, and “Yeah!” became one of its defining songs. Billboard named him the top Hot 100 artist of the 2000s.

Two decades after that, he was still headlining the biggest stages in the world. He sold out two Las Vegas residencies, headlined the Super Bowl halftime show and completed the highest-grossing tour of his career. In 2026 he launched a co-headlining stadium tour with Chris Brown, arguing that R&B deserves the same stadium-scale recognition as pop, rock and hip-hop.

Early Life: Dallas, Chattanooga and Atlanta

Usher Raymond IV was born on October 14, 1978, in Dallas, Texas. He spent much of his early childhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he was raised by his mother, Jonnetta Patton. His father was largely absent from his life. Usher began singing in a church choir directed by his mother, and his grandmother noticed his vocal talent.

Around age 12, he joined a local R&B group called NuBeginning and recorded songs with them. Believing he had a real chance at a music career, his family moved to Atlanta, a center of Black music in the 1990s.

At 13, after performing in a talent showcase in Atlanta, he was introduced to L.A. Reid, co-founder of LaFace Records. Reid signed him almost immediately after hearing him sing Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road”. His mother left her job to become his manager.

Teenage Debut

His self-titled debut album, Usher, was released in 1994, when he was 15. Sean “Puffy” Combs was among its producers. The album produced the minor hit “Can U Get wit It” but was not a major commercial success.

His breakthrough came with his second album, My Way (1997), largely produced by Jermaine Dupri, who would become one of his most important collaborators. “You Make Me Wanna…” reached No. 2 on the Hot 100, and “Nice & Slow” became his first No. 1 in 1998. The album established his image as a smooth, sexy R&B singer and a powerful dancer in the tradition of Michael Jackson.

He also pursued acting in the late 1990s, appearing in The Faculty (1998) and She’s All That (1999), and in the TV series Moesha. In 1999 he founded Usher’s New Look, a nonprofit that provides leadership training to young people from underserved communities.

8701

His third album, 8701 (2001), took him to a new level. “U Remind Me” and “U Got It Bad” both reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. He won Grammys for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2002 (“U Remind Me”) and 2003 (“U Don’t Have to Call”).

Confessions

Confessions, released in March 2004, became his defining album and one of the biggest R&B albums ever. It sold more than 1 million copies in its first week in the United States.

The lead single, “Yeah!”, featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris, combined crunk with R&B and spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100. “Burn”, “Confessions Part II” and “My Boo” with Alicia Keys also reached No. 1. The title songs told a story about a man confessing infidelity, which listeners widely read as partly autobiographical.

Confessions was certified diamond in the United States. Billboard later named it the top solo album of the 2000s, and Usher the top Hot 100 artist of the decade. At the 2005 Grammys, he won three awards, including Best Contemporary R&B Album.

Personal Life and Changes

In 2007, he married stylist Tameka Foster. They had two sons, Usher V (born 2007) and Naviyd (born 2008), and divorced in 2009. Also in 2007, Usher split professionally from his mother as manager, though they later reconciled. In 2012, his stepson Kile Glover, Foster’s son from a previous relationship, died after a jet-ski accident in Georgia.

Here I Stand, Raymond v. Raymond and “OMG”

Here I Stand (2008) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featured the No. 1 hit “Love in This Club” with Young Jeezy. It reflected his marriage and fatherhood.

Raymond v. Raymond (2010) also debuted at No. 1, and “OMG” with will.i.am topped the Hot 100. He followed it with the EP Versus (2010), which included “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” with Pitbull. These dance-pop hits showed his ability to adapt to the electronic sound dominating pop at the time.

In 2008, Usher and manager Scooter Braun signed the teenage Justin Bieber through a joint venture, Raymond Braun Media Group, and Usher became one of Bieber’s early mentors.

Looking 4 Myself and the Voice

Looking 4 Myself (2012) was his fourth consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. “Climax”, produced by Diplo, won the Grammy for Best R&B Performance in 2013, bringing his total to eight Grammys.

He served as a coach on NBC’s The Voice in 2013 and 2014, and his UR Experience Tour ran in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and played boxer Sugar Ray Leonard in the film Hands of Stone.

His albums Hard II Love (2016) and A (2018), a collaboration with Atlanta producer Zaytoven, were less commercially successful. Many observers believed his peak years were behind him.

Las Vegas Reinvention

His career revived dramatically through Las Vegas. In July 2021, he launched a residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. It was followed by a longer residency, My Way: The Vegas Residency, at Dolby Live at Park MGM, from 2022 to 2023.

The shows were widely praised for their choreography, roller-skating sequences and production. According to Billboard Boxscore, his two residencies grossed $114.6 million across 100 shows, more than any of his previous tours. His NPR Tiny Desk concert in 2022 also went viral.

Coming Home and the Super Bowl

In September 2023, the NFL announced Usher as the headliner of the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show in Las Vegas. On February 9, 2024, two days before the game, he released his ninth album, Coming Home, the first release on his own independent label, Mega, in partnership with Gamma. It included the single “Good Good” with Summer Walker and 21 Savage.

His halftime show on February 11, 2024, featured Alicia Keys, Jermaine Dupri, H.E.R., will.i.am, Lil Jon and Ludacris, and included a roller-skating segment. The NFL reported that it averaged 129.3 million viewers, which made it the most-watched halftime show ever at the time.

Coming Home debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 91,000 units and at No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart. Its sales week was the largest for an R&B album in more than four years. His catalog also surged after the performance.

On the night of the Super Bowl, he married Jennifer Goicoechea in Las Vegas. The couple have two children, Sovereign Bo (born 2020) and Sire (born 2021).

Later in 2024, he received the BET Lifetime Achievement Award, and Billboard ranked him No. 11 on its list of the greatest pop stars of the 21st century.

Past Present Future

In August 2024, he launched Usher: Past Present Future, his first solo headline tour in a decade. Demand expanded the original 24 dates to dozens more. The tour continued in 2025 with residency-style runs in Europe, including multiple nights at London’s O2 Arena, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. A planned Australian leg was cancelled in July 2025.

According to Billboard Boxscore, the tour grossed $183.9 million and sold 1.1 million tickets over 80 shows, making it the highest-grossing and best-selling tour of his career. In November 2025, Billboard honored him as a “Legend of Live” at its Live Music Summit.

The R&B Tour With Chris Brown

In April 2026, Usher and Chris Brown announced The R&B Tour, a co-headlining stadium tour, its name referring both to the genre and their surnames, Raymond and Brown. Produced by Live Nation, it was announced as a 33-date North American run. It opened on June 26, 2026, at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver and is scheduled to end in Tampa in December 2026. Due to demand, extra shows were added in cities including Los Angeles, Atlanta and Miami. The tour partners with Global Citizen, donating $1 from each ticket to an education fund.

The pairing drew criticism because of Brown’s history of legal troubles, including his 2009 assault of Rihanna. In a June 2026 interview with the Associated Press, Usher said those controversies had “absolutely not” influenced his decision. He framed the tour as a statement about R&B’s importance and the artists who built the genre.

Style and Legacy

Usher’s influence comes from his combination of skills: a smooth, agile tenor voice, elite dancing and stagecraft, and a gift for adapting to new sounds without losing his R&B core. He has moved through 1990s new jack and R&B, crunk&B, dance-pop and contemporary R&B while remaining recognizably himself.

He has sold more than 100 million records worldwide. He has eight Grammys, nine Hot 100 No. 1s and a run of No. 1 albums. Confessions remains a benchmark for R&B albums, and his Las Vegas residencies, Super Bowl performance and recent tours have made him one of the most respected live performers of his generation.

At 47, Usher is in the middle of one of the strongest late-career stretches in popular music.
