Ariana Grande: The Voice That Grew Up in Public

Few pop stars have grown up as publicly as Ariana Grande. She was a teenager on Broadway, a sitcom actress on Nickelodeon, and then a four-octave pop singer whose whistle notes became a signature. Over more than a decade, she experienced global stardom alongside public grief, and she turned much of it into music that topped charts around the world.

In 2024 she fulfilled a childhood ambition by playing Glinda in Wicked, which earned her an Oscar nomination. In 2026 she released an album, completed her first tour in seven years and announced she would step back from public life. Her career has consistently combined huge success with intense scrutiny.

Early Life in Boca Raton

Ariana Grande-Butera was born on June 26, 1993, in Boca Raton, Florida. Her mother, Joan Grande, is a business executive who ran a communications equipment company, and her father, Edward Butera, is a graphic designer. Her parents separated when she was young. She has an older half-brother, Frankie Grande, who later became a performer, TV personality and producer.

She is of Italian-American descent, and she grew up surrounded by music and theatre. As a child she performed with children’s theatre companies in Florida and sang at local events, including sporting events. She has said she loved Wicked from childhood and dreamed of playing Glinda long before becoming famous.

Broadway and Nickelodeon

At 15, she was cast in the Broadway musical 13 in 2008, playing Charlotte, a cheerleader. The role earned her a National Youth Theatre Association award and introduced her to Nickelodeon.

She soon joined the cast of Victorious, a Nickelodeon sitcom about students at a performing arts high school, which ran from 2010 to 2013. She played Cat Valentine, a sweet and scatterbrained character with bright red hair. She dyed her hair red for the part and wore it that way for years. The show made her a household name among teenagers, and she later reprised the role in the spinoff Sam & Cat (2013–2014) with Jennette McCurdy.

Her debut album, Yours Truly, was released in 2013 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It was a nostalgic R&B-pop record that drew many comparisons to Mariah Carey. The lead single, “The Way” with Mac Miller, became her first top 10 hit.

Her second album, My Everything (2014), made her a global pop star. “Problem” with Iggy Azalea, “Break Free” with Zedd and “Bang Bang” with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj all became international hits. The album also debuted at No. 1, and she began headlining arenas.

Dangerous Woman (2016) showed a more mature and confident artist, with the title track, “Into You” and “Side to Side” featuring Nicki Minaj. Many critics consider it the point where she became a fully formed pop artist.

Manchester and One Love Manchester

The most painful chapter of her life happened on May 22, 2017. As fans were leaving her Dangerous Woman Tour concert at Manchester Arena in England, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive in the arena’s foyer, killing 22 people, many of them young fans and parents.

Grande suspended the tour and returned home. Less than two weeks later, on June 4, she returned to Manchester to host One Love Manchester, a benefit concert with artists including Coldplay, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. The concert raised millions for the victims’ families, and Manchester made her an honorary citizen. She has since spoken about experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder after the attack.

Sweetener, Loss and Thank U, Next

She returned with Sweetener in August 2018, a bright, experimental pop album largely produced by Pharrell Williams and Max Martin’s team, including the producer Ilya Salmanzadeh. Songs like “No Tears Left to Cry” addressed healing after Manchester. The album won her first Grammy, Best Pop Vocal Album.

That year was also one of great personal upheaval. In September 2018, her former boyfriend Mac Miller died of an accidental overdose. Weeks later, her brief engagement to comedian Pete Davidson ended.

Her answer came within months. “Thank u, next”, released in November 2018, thanked her past partners by name and turned the breakup into gratitude. It became her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album Thank U, Next followed in February 2019, just six months after Sweetener. “7 Rings” spent eight weeks at No. 1, and in February 2019 she held the top three spots on the Hot 100 at the same time, something no act had done since the Beatles in 1964. During the pandemic, she recorded a series of duets: “Stuck With U” with Justin Bieber and “Rain on Me” with Lady Gaga, which won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. In November 2021, director Jon M. Chu cast her as Glinda opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba in a two-part film adaptation of Wicked. For Grande, it was the realization of a lifelong dream. She legally added “Ariana” to her name for professional credit during the process and publicly stated that she would put music on hold to focus on the role.

Wicked premiered in November 2024 and became a major box-office and critical success. Grande’s comic timing and singing on “Popular” drew wide praise. Between the Wicked shoots, Grande returned to music. Her seventh album, Eternal Sunshine, came out in March 2024. It was named after the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and dealt with divorce, new love and public scrutiny. It was co-produced by Ilya and Max Martin.

It was also a major commercial success. The album spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced two No. 1 singles, “Yes, And?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)”. “Yes, And?” included a direct response to public comments about her appearance. In March 2025, she released a deluxe edition, Eternal Sunshine Deluxe: Brighter Days Ahead, with new songs and a short film.

Petal

After Wicked: For Good, many expected her to focus on acting, and she had hinted as much in interviews. Instead, in April 2026, she announced her eighth studio album, Petal. She described it as something full of life, growing through the cracks of something hard and challenging. She co-wrote and executive-produced it with Ilya, and it was released through Republic Records on July 31, 2026, in the middle of her tour. The 12-track album was led by “Hate That I Made You Love Me”, which reached No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Petal debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 295,000 equivalent units, her best week of the 2020s and her largest opening since Thank U, Next. It was her seventh No. 1 album, tying her with Janet Jackson and Lady Gaga for the fifth-most among solo women.

The Eternal Sunshine Tour

Grande announced her first tour in seven years in August 2025. Instead of a long world tour, she chose multi-night stays in a limited number of cities. The Eternal Sunshine Tour opened on June 6, 2026, at Oakland Arena. She co-directed the show with longtime collaborator Christian Breslauer, and it was structured as a theatrical, multi-act show covering her whole career, including the first live performances of songs from Positions.

The tour ended on September 1, 2026, with the last of 10 shows at London’s O2 Arena. According to Billboard Boxscore, its 41 shows grossed $107.9 million and sold 638,000 tickets. It earned less than the much longer Sweetener World Tour, but its per-show average was her highest ever: 74% more gross per show than her previous record. Her 10-night London residency grossed $27.7 million on its own, her highest-grossing single-venue run.

Stepping Back From the Spotlight

In early August 2026, while the tour was still in North America, her representative announced she would “step back from visibility” after the tour. The statement said the break would follow years of public-facing work that had brought endless public scrutiny. She also withdrew from a planned 2027 West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George, where she had been set to star opposite her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey.

The announcement followed renewed online commentary about her appearance after the release of the “Petal” music video. At a Chicago concert the next night, she addressed fans directly. She said the decision was neither reactive nor impulsive but a plan she had made long before, from a place of empowerment, and she dismissed concerns that negativity had ruined the experience.

She ended the tour in London in tears, calling it one of the most extraordinary experiences of her life and thanking her fans. A role in the comedy Focker-in-Law had already been filmed and is scheduled for release later in 2026.

Voice, Style and Legacy

Grande’s signature is her voice: a light, agile soprano that spans four octaves and reaches whistle notes, often compared to Mariah Carey. Over time she has shaped it into a distinctive modern pop and R&B style built around stacked harmonies and conversational songwriting.
