Megan Thee Stallion: The Houston Hottie Who Refused to Be Silenced
Megan Thee Stallion is one of the defining rap stars of her era. With her confident lyrics, Houston swagger and catchphrases like “Hot Girl Summer”, she became a symbol of female self-confidence and a hip-hop superstar with three Grammys and multiple No. 1 hits.
Her career has also been shaped by tragedy and adversity. She lost both parents young, was shot in 2020 by rapper Tory Lanez, and endured years of online harassment and doubt. Through it all, she continued to release music, earned a college degree, became an independent artist, and in 2026 made her Broadway debut.
Early Life in Houston
Megan Jovon Ruth Pete was born on February 15, 1995, in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Houston’s South Park neighborhood. Her mother, Holly Thomas, was a rapper who performed under the name Holly-Wood, and Megan often went to recording sessions with her as a child. Her father died when she was a teenager.
She began writing raps at 14. Her mother initially encouraged her to wait until she was older before performing her more explicit lyrics. She attended Pearland High School. Her stage name came from being called a “stallion” as a teenager because of her height, 5 feet 10 inches, and curvy build, a Southern term for a tall, statuesque woman.
Freestyles and Early Mixtapes
While attending college, first at Prairie View A&M University and later at Texas Southern University, she built a following by posting freestyle videos online. A video of her battling male rappers in a cypher went viral.
She released her debut single, “Like a Stallion”, in 2016. Her 2016 EP, Make It Hot, included “Last Week in HTx”, which gained millions of YouTube views. Her fans became known as the “Hotties”.
Signing and Tina Snow
In 2018, she signed with 1501 Certified Entertainment, a Houston label founded by former baseball player Carl Crawford. Her music was distributed through 300 Entertainment, and she became the first female rapper signed to 300. Later that year she signed a management deal with Roc Nation.
Her EP Tina Snow (2018) introduced an alter ego named Tina Snow, a more brash version of herself inspired partly by rapper Pimp C’s Tony Snow persona. “Big Ole Freak” became her first song to enter the Billboard Hot 100.
Loss of Her Mother
In March 2019, her mother died of a brain tumor. Her great-grandmother died the same month. Holly Thomas had also been her manager. Megan has repeatedly said her mother’s death changed her life and that she continued working partly to honor her.
Fever and “Hot Girl Summer”
Her mixtape Fever, released in May 2019, reached the top 10 of the Billboard 200. The phrase “Hot Girl Summer”, which she popularized, became a cultural phenomenon that summer, describing women enjoying themselves confidently and unapologetically. In August 2019 she released the single “Hot Girl Summer” with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, which reached No. 11 on the Hot 100.
“Savage” and “WAP”
Her EP Suga, released in March 2020, included “Savage”, which became a viral TikTok dance challenge. Its remix featuring Beyoncé, released in April 2020, reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, Megan’s first No. 1. Proceeds from the remix went to Bread of Life, a Houston nonprofit helping people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In August 2020, she was featured on Cardi B’s “WAP”, which debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and became one of the year’s most talked-about songs. TIME named her one of the 100 most influential people of 2020.
The 2020 Shooting
In July 2020, Megan was shot in the feet in Los Angeles. She later identified the shooter as Canadian rapper Tory Lanez. She faced intense public skepticism and online abuse, and has spoken about how hard it was to be doubted as a victim. In an October 2020 New York Times op-ed, she wrote about why she speaks up for Black women.
In December 2022, a Los Angeles jury convicted Lanez of three felonies related to the shooting. In August 2023, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Good News and Three Grammys
Her debut studio album, Good News, was released in November 2020. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and included “Body”. At the 2021 Grammys, she won Best New Artist and won Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for the “Savage” remix with Beyoncé, giving her three Grammys.
In December 2021, she graduated from Texas Southern University with a bachelor’s degree in health administration, a goal she had said her mother wanted for her.
Traumazine and Independence
Her disputes with 1501 Certified over her contract and royalties became a long-running legal battle. Her second studio album, Traumazine (2022), released amid the dispute, addressed betrayal, grief and mental health. It debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.
She eventually settled with the label in 2023 and became an independent artist through her own company, Hot Girl Productions, with distribution through Warner Music.

She also began acting, appearing in P-Valley, Marvel’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and the A24 film Dicks: The Musical (2023).
“Hiss” and Megan
In January 2024, she released “Hiss”, a fierce track that many listeners interpreted as aimed at her critics and rivals. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, her first solo No. 1. It also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, making her the first female rapper in a lead role to debut atop that chart.
Her third studio album, Megan, was released on June 28, 2024. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 with 64,000 units, the biggest week for a rap album by a woman that year. It included “Cobra”, “Boa” and “Mamushi”. “Mamushi”, featuring Japanese rapper Yuki Chiba, became a viral hit.
That summer, she embarked on the Hot Girl Summer Tour, her first headlining arena tour, with GloRilla as special guest. Before it began, Roc Nation reported more than 240,000 tickets sold and 13 sold-out arena stops.
In October 2024, Prime Video released the documentary Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words, and she surprise-released Megan: Act II, an expanded edition of the album.
Courtroom Victory
In 2024, Megan sued blogger Milagro Gramz, whose legal name is Milagro Cooper, accusing her of defaming her and promoting a sexually explicit deepfake video of her while acting as a “mouthpiece” for Tory Lanez. In December 2025, a federal jury in Miami found Cooper liable for defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress and promoting an altered sexual depiction, awarding Megan $75,000. At trial, Megan testified that she still felt “a little, like, defeated” by the harassment.
The judge initially set aside the defamation portion because the jury had classified Cooper as a media defendant. On May 29, 2026, the judge reinstated the defamation verdict and the full $75,000 award, finding that Cooper had been acting on behalf of Lanez and his family. A separate request for an injunction to stop Cooper from commenting about her was denied. Cooper has sought to appeal.
Personal Life
In 2025, Megan publicly confirmed her relationship with NBA player Klay Thompson. She frequently refers to him in interviews and social media.
She has also built her brand through philanthropy, including the Pete & Thomas Foundation, named for her parents, and through business ventures including endorsements and her own products.
2026: Broadway and Act III
In January 2026, she told NME she was working on Act III, the next part of her Megan album trilogy, and planned to release new music that year. She said her mindset for the year was “disciplined”. In February, she appeared on the remix of Juvenile’s viral song “B.B.B.”.
On March 24, 2026, she made her Broadway debut in Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, playing the nightclub owner Zidler. She was the first female-identifying performer to play the role in any production of the musical worldwide. Her limited run lasted through May 17, 2026, and the production included hints of her own songs. Rolling Stone described her performances as drawing large crowds. On March 31, she became ill during a performance and was taken to a hospital; her team said her symptoms were being evaluated.
On September 29, 2026, she released “Tina Tuesday Freestyle”, reviving her Tina Snow alter ego. On the same day, she announced she would perform at the 2026 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Los Angeles on October 18, alongside KATSEYE, Megan Moroney and Tate McRae. She called it a dream come true.
As of October 2026, Act III had not been given a release date.
Style and Legacy
Megan’s rap style combines Houston’s slow, heavy bounce with sharp, rapid-fire delivery and confident, often explicit lyrics celebrating female sexuality and independence. Her influences include Houston legends such as Pimp C, Bun B and UGK, as well as female rappers like Lil’ Kim.
Beyond her music, she has become a public advocate for Black women, mental health and education. Her persistence through personal loss, a shooting, legal battles and online harassment has made her story one of resilience. Her rise from viral freestyles to independent superstar also shows how much artists can now control their careers.
At 31, Megan Thee Stallion has three Grammys, three Hot 100 No. 1s, a successful independent career, a history-making Broadway run and a new album on the way.
